Jays Almost Had Niese Instead Of Dickey
- Updated: March 7, 2013
On December 16th the Blue Jays made a splash adding reigning NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey. However Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reported the Mets could have traded Jon Niese for Travis D’Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard instead of R.A. Dickey. The Mets were given the option to choose between Dickey and Niese for the package that turned into Dickey. The Mets were smart to keep Jon Niese, who is under team control until potentially 2018 and a great pitcher.
“Toronto has loved Niese for years,” one source said. “They absolutely would have done that.”
Very interesting to hear that the Jays would have traded the same package for Jon Niese. I think that the move would have done us better in the long term, and saves us a bit of money compared to Dickey in the two years after the upcoming season. However I don’t think the move would have gone over well with a lot of Jays fans. Trading a top 10 prospect, and Syndergaard a top 50 prospect for a guy who would have been the third starter this year would probably phase their interest in this season.
So who would you rather have, Jon Niese or R.A. Dickey?
